New Hampshire employment resources

New Hampshire has a real safety net for job seekers — free job centers, career counseling, training money, and specialized help if you have a disability or a barrier to work. Most of it is free and often overlooked. Here's who does what and how to reach them.

Who this is for: Anyone in NH who wants free, in-person help finding work or training.

Not sure where to start? Dial 211

NH 211 is a free, confidential helpline that connects you to the right program for your situation — jobs, training, benefits, housing, and more. Available 24/7: just dial 211 (or 1-866-444-4211). It's the fastest way to find the closest, most current help.

NH Employment Security & NHWorks job centers

NH Employment Security (NHES)runs the state's job centers, called NHWorks, with locations around the state. They're free and open to everyone — you don't have to be collecting unemployment to use them.

What a NHWorks center offers, at no cost:

  • • Help searching and applying for jobs, in person
  • • Resume and cover-letter help, and computers and internet to use
  • • Access to the NH Job Match System (the state job bank)
  • • Workshops on interviewing, job searching, and more
  • • Referrals to training funds and other programs you may qualify for

Filing for unemployment

If you've lost a job through no fault of your own, you may qualify for unemployment benefits — temporary weekly payments while you look for work. In NH you file through NH Employment Security, and you generally must be able and available to work and actively searching.

Apply as soon as you're out of work

Benefits don't backdate on their own, so file the week you become unemployed. If you're unsure whether you qualify, apply anyway and let them decide — and a NHWorks center can walk you through it in person.

Vocational Rehabilitation (if you have a disability)

If a physical or mental health condition makes it harder to get or keep a job, NH's Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program can help — with career counseling, training, help with accommodations, and support finding and keeping work. A mental health condition can absolutely qualify. Services are free to eligible Granite Staters.

Free & low-cost training

You don't always need a four-year degree — NH has short, practical programs that lead to real jobs, and much of it is free or funded:

Training can be paid for

Through NHWorks and Vocational Rehabilitation, you may be able to get training funded if it leads to a job. Always ask, "Is there money to help me pay for training?" before assuming you can't afford it.

Community Action agencies & extra support

NH's Community Action agencies serve every county with a wide range of help — some run job-readiness and support programs, and all of them can connect you to food, fuel assistance, transportation, and child care that make holding a job possible.

The barriers around a job matter too

Transportation, child care, food, and housing can make or break your ability to work. Our how-to guides cover applying for Medicaid, food and fuel assistance, and housing — all of which can steady the ground under a job search.
