Understand what’s going on
What is therapy, really?
You don’t need to have it all figured out
What a first session actually feels like
Walk through it start to finish so there are fewer surprises.
- 1
Before you go in
You might fill out a few forms — some history, what brings you in, an emergency contact. There’s no test to pass. It’s okay to write “I’m not sure” or leave things blank until you feel ready to talk about them.
- 2
The first few minutes
A good therapist starts by putting you at ease, not grilling you. They’ll explain how they work, how confidentiality works, and what to expect. You’re allowed to just say, “Honestly, I don’t really know where to start.” That’s a completely normal first sentence.
- 3
The heart of the session
Mostly, they’ll ask questions and listen. This first one is often called an “intake” — it’s them getting to know you and what you’re hoping for, not solving everything today. You lead the depth. You never have to share more than you’re ready to.
- 4
Near the end
You might talk about what you’d like to work on and whether it feels like a fit. It’s okay if you leave unsure — you can decide after sitting with it. Fit matters more than credentials, and noticing it is your job too.
- 5
Afterward
It’s normal to feel lighter, drained, wobbly, or all three. Feelings can stir up for a day or two. Be gentle with yourself — that’s the work starting, not something going wrong.
